Working the Fields of Walla Walla as a Boy

Cutting onions and planting, suckering, weeding, and planting corn, picking strawberries, bucking bales, and the pea harvest kept me busy from 12-15.

One time I started driving a pea vine spreader truck, for 36 hours straight when I was 14.

This was not unusual for the time in in the Walla Walla. There were no child labor laws. I liked to work and make money for clothes and spending money during the school year.

A farmworker in a straw hat and gloves kneels in a field, cutting the tops from rows of harvested onions, with other workers bent over the rows behind him.
