Walking in Respect with Inuit Elders and Communities of Nunavut

Brother Phil worked in Nunavut for five years, supporting Inuit Elders and Communities in the formation and transfer of Nunavut back into the hands of their rightful owners. Brother Phil never tried to impose any cultural traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the South on their Inuit relatives of the North.

All Brother Phil shared was always translated into Inuitaquet, as most Elders and many community members only spoke.

Inuit communities were primarily Anglican, Catholic, and Pentecostal at that time. In respect of his Inuit relatives, Brother Phil attended all three church services in Coral Harbor, Rankin Inlet, and other Nunavut Inuit communities.

Brother Phil utilized Bible Scriptures to highlight Four Worlds Human and Community principles and strategies. For example, when Brother Phil Introduced the Talking Circle, he used a stone representing Peter, on who Jesus symbolically said he would spiritually build his Church.

Like other Indigenous peoples who were punished and ostracized for practicing thier own Indigenous Cultures and Spiritually, but who were and became Christians in the highest sense of the word, did not speak English.

They did not become devout Christians who lived a spiritual life because of any complex theology! Instead, they became Christians because of the Sacred Stories and Spiritual Teachings of Love, Compassion, Kindness, and Justice that Jesus modeled and shared in serving and giving his life for the People.
