The Sacred Family of Thunder, Lighting, and Rain
At the beginning of creation, when the world was still young and filled with untamed energies, there was a spirit named Thunder. Thunder roamed the vast skies with power and might, rumbling across the heavens with a loud voice that could shake the mountains and echo through the valleys.
Yet, for all his strength, Thunder had no purpose. He roared and bellowed, but his presence brought no blessings to the world below. The Creator of All Good Things, ever-compassionate and wise, looked upon Thunder and saw his loneliness.
The Creator whispered into the winds, "This mighty one must learn the meaning of love and harmony, for only then will he fulfill his sacred purpose."
From the depths of the heavens, the Creator brought forth another spirit that would complement and balance Thunder. This spirit was Rain, a being of gentleness and nurturing grace. Rain carried within her the power to bring life to Mother Earth. Her touch was soft and cool, and her presence was a balm to all who lived. When Rain appeared, the skies seemed to shimmer with her beauty, and the Creator smiled, knowing she would be the perfect match for Thunder.
One fateful day, as Thunder rumbled across the skies, he encountered Rain for the first time. At that moment, something profound stirred within him. Her presence calmed his restless energy, and her gentle nature awakened a tenderness he had never known.
Thunder, who had always been loud and brash, softened as he approached Rain. Rain, in turn, was drawn to the raw power of Thunder, seeing in him a force that could protect and uplift her gifts. The Creator watched as these two mighty spirits fell deeply in love, their bond forged by the sacred design of creation.
From that day forward, Thunder and Rain became inseparable. They danced across the skies, their union celebrating balance and harmony. Thunder's booming voice would announce Rain's arrival, a joyful proclamation that carried across the lands.
"Stand up in honor!" Thunder would call. "A Sacred Woman is coming. My beloved wife, Rain, is coming! Behold, a Sacred Woman is coming!"
Rain would follow, descending from the heavens with grace, her gentle touch bringing life and renewal to all she touched. Plants drank deeply of her blessings, rivers swelled with gratitude, and animals rejoiced in her presence. Thunder and Rain became a source of awe and reverence for all creation.
Yet, their love for one another was so profound that they wished to create something even more beautiful—a gift embodying their union. And so, a child was born in the space between Thunder’s roar and Rain’s gentle fall. They named him Lightning.
Lightning was unlike any being that had ever existed. He carried his father's strength and his mother's grace, a dazzling spirit who lit up the skies with every flash. When Lightning danced across the heavens, it was as if the Creator’s hand had painted the world with the brightest colors. Thunder and Rain were filled with pride and joy, vowing to guide and protect their precious child.
Lightning learned to wield his gifts with wisdom and purpose as he grew. Thunder taught him how to command the skies with strength and courage, while Rain showed him how to bring light and beauty to the world with care and humility. Lightning became a bridge between his parents, embodying the perfect balance of their qualities. He brought wonder to the heavens and Mother Earth, a reminder of the sacred harmony that could be found in unity.
When storms swept across the lands, it was said that the Sacred Family was at work. Thunder’s mighty voice carried the promise of life-giving rain. Rain’s touch replenished the earth, and Lightning’s brilliance illuminated the skies, guiding the way.
The people below would pause in awe, listening to the rumble of Thunder, feeling the gentle caress of Rain, and marveling at the beauty of Lightning’s dance. They knew they were witnessing a sacred moment, a testament to the eternal love and harmony of the Sacred Family.
The story of Thunder, Rain, and Lightning became a cherished teaching passed down through generations. It reminded the people of the Creator’s compassion and wisdom, the importance of balance and unity, and the beauty of sacred relationships.
Even now, when storms roll across the heavens, children gather close to their families and listen carefully. They hear Thunder’s voice and remember his call:
"Stand up in honor! A Sacred Woman is coming. My wife, Rain, is coming! Behold, a Sacred Woman is coming!"
They watch as Rain nourishes the land and as Lightning paints the skies, knowing that they are witnessing the eternal dance of a family that brings life, joy, and harmony to the world.
And so, the Sacred Family of Thunder, Rain, and Lightning continue to bless Mother Earth, and their love is a shining example of the Creator’s design. We are forever grateful to the Creator of All Good Things, who brought them together and gifted us their story of love, balance, and the beauty of sacred relationships.
My Hunka Ate, Lionel Kinunwa, Miniconjou, from Cheyenne River, told me this story in the early 1990’s.
