The Power of Wakan Tanka to Transform Our Character

When our Elders speak of the Power of Wakan Tanka, they are not speaking only of belief, nor of ideas that live in the mind. They are speaking of a living relationship with the Great Mystery, the sacred source from which all life flows. Wakan Tanka is the breath within the wind, the movement of the rivers, the quiet intelligence within the forests, and the sacred spark within every human being. Because we are born from that sacred source, transformation is always possible for us. No matter how wounded, confused, or lost a human being may become, the door to renewal is never closed.

Our old people understood that the human being is not fixed or finished. We are always becoming. Just as the seasons transform Mother Earth—from winter’s stillness to spring’s awakening—our spirits also move through cycles of purification, renewal, and rebirth. When we turn sincerely toward Wakan Tanka through prayer, humility, and reflection, something begins to shift within us. The heart softens. The mind clears. The spirit begins to remember who we truly are.

Prayer, in the Indigenous understanding, is not merely asking for something. Prayer is alignment. It is the act of bringing our thoughts, our intentions, and our actions into harmony with the sacred order of the universe. When a person prays sincerely—whether through words, through song, through silence, or through ceremony—they begin to listen as much as they speak. Over time, that listening awakens a deeper awareness. The individual begins to feel the presence of Wakan Tanka moving through all things.

Meditation and reflection serve a similar purpose. Our ancestors often sought quiet places—on a hilltop, beside a river, or beneath the wide sky—to sit in stillness and allow the spirit to become clear. In those moments of quiet, the noise of the world falls away, and a deeper wisdom begins to rise within the heart. This is why many nations speak of “remembering” rather than learning, because the sacred truths are already placed within us by the Creator.

Yet transformation does not happen through prayer and reflection alone. Service to others is the true test of spiritual growth. When the spirit becomes aligned with Wakan Tanka, it naturally expresses itself through compassion, generosity, and responsibility toward the Human Family and toward Mother Earth. The person who once lived only for themselves begins to live for the well-being of the whole circle of life.

This is why our teachings remind us that the sacred path is a path of becoming useful to the people. A transformed human being does not withdraw from the world; rather, they step more fully into it. Their actions begin to carry healing. Their words begin to carry encouragement. Their presence begins to bring peace into the places where conflict once lived.

Over time, this sacred process can completely reshape a person’s character. Fear begins to give way to courage. Anger begins to give way to patience. Selfishness begins to give way to generosity. The person who once walked in confusion begins to walk with purpose. In this way, Wakan Tanka does not merely comfort us—the Great Mystery remakes us.

This transformation is not sudden or dramatic like lightning striking the ground. More often it is like the slow growth of a great tree. Each prayer is a root growing deeper into the earth. Each act of kindness is a new branch reaching toward the sun. Each moment of humility strengthens the trunk of the spirit. After many seasons of living this way, a person may look back and realize they have become someone entirely different from who they once were.

The Indigenous teachings remind us that this personal transformation is not meant only for the individual. When one person heals, the family begins to heal. When families heal, communities begin to heal. When communities heal, nations begin to heal. In this way, the sacred transformation of the human heart becomes the foundation for the healing of Mother Earth herself.

So when we speak of the Power of Wakan Tanka transforming our character, we are speaking of something very profound. We are speaking of the sacred possibility that lives within every human being, the possibility that through humility, prayer, reflection, and service, we can grow into the kind of people our ancestors prayed we would become.

And when enough human beings walk this path, something extraordinary begins to happen. The circle of life comes back into balance. The human family remembers its unity. And the light that Wakan Tanka placed within us begins to shine across the whole world.
