The Massive Scale of Indigenous Power in Canada

The Massive Scale of Indigenous Power in Canada.

Across Canada, Indigenous Peoples hold a vast and powerful foundation of land, rights, capital, governance, and future opportunity. Modern treaty lands alone now cover more than 600,000 square kilometers, an area twice the size of Germany. This is not a small or symbolic presence. It is a living territorial foundation that carries legal, economic, cultural, and spiritual power.

Inuit Nunangat represents one of the clearest examples of this scale. It includes approximately 40 percent of Canada’s landmass and 72 percent of its coastline under Inuit stewardship. This means that Indigenous governance is not marginal to Canada’s future. It is central to the future of the land, the waters, the Arctic, the coastline, natural resources, environmental protection, and long-term national development.

The financial scale is also significant. Indigenous governments, organizations, and institutions are connected to an estimated $25–$30 billion in annual core funding flow. Beyond this, there is a future value of more than $50 billion in active claims, along with more than 170 active negotiation tables. These figures reveal that Indigenous Peoples are not simply participants in Canada’s economy; they are major rights holders, asset holders, and nation-builders whose collective strength is still unfolding.

The core insight is clear: Indigenous Peoples are not dependents. We are major asset holders, rights holders, land stewards, and builders of a new future. The power already exists across the land, the nations, the treaties, the organizations, the capital flows, and the sacred responsibilities carried by Indigenous Peoples. What is still needed is deeper coordination, greater unity, and Indigenous-led action that can bring this immense power into one living circle of purpose.
