The Local Spiritual Assembly as a Living Tipi

The Local Spiritual Assembly as a Living Tipi: A Sacred Circle for the Guidance of Humanity

The Local Spiritual Assembly is not simply an elected administrative body—it is a Living Tipi, a sacred lodge raised in every locality by the hands of devoted souls who gather in the spirit of consultation, love, and unity. It is where the spiritual fire is kindled. It is where prayers rise like smoke through the smoke hole to the heavens. The community finds shelter, warmth, and guidance beneath the covering of divine law and spiritual principle.

In our Dakota way, the Tipi is a sacred universe, not built by accident, but through knowledge passed down from the ancestors. Each pole is placed with meaning. Each has a spiritual role. Without all the poles, the lodge cannot stand. Without unity among the poles, the covering cannot hold. So it is with the Local Spiritual Assembly.

The Tipi Poles of the Local Spiritual Assembly

Let us reflect on the nine poles of this Unique Tipi, which symbolize the nine members of the Assembly. Each pole must be firmly rooted in humility and spiritual principle, or the lodge will not endure the winds of testing.

Faithfulness to the Covenant – the central pole, like the backbone of the lodge, representing unwavering alignment with the sacred guidance of the Blessed Beauty, the Most Great and High Power . Without it, all else collapses.

Detachment from Self – allowing the Assembly to rise above ego, ambition, and preference. This pole lets the tipi breathe.

Unity in Diversity – honoring every voice while seeking the harmony of the whole. As with poles of different shapes and grains, each one strengthens the lodge when bound by love.

Truthfulness and Clarity – a pole of straightness and transparency. Without truth, the covering sags and misleads.

Loving-kindness and Patience – the flexible yet enduring pole, absorbing tension without breaking. It helps hold the circle together when the winds blow hard.

Wisdom and Discernment – this pole allows the Assembly to see clearly, like an elder gazing over the prairie. It reminds the body to listen deeply before deciding.

Courage and Justice – a strong and bold pole, standing firm when decisions must be made. It holds the lodge upright when pressure comes.

Service and Sacrifice – the hidden pole that bears weight without seeking recognition. It reminds each member: “I am here to serve, not to be served.”

Prayer and Reflection are the final poles, opening the heart to the sacred. They are the path to divine assistance, ensuring the fire inside remains pure and undying.

The Sacred Fire Within

At the center of the lodge is the fire. It represents the Spirit of the Faith, the Light of the Covenant, and the Living Word that guides the Assembly’s deliberations. The fire is not for personal warmth alone—it is for the whole community to gather, learn, and be healed.

When the Assembly meets in the spirit of consultation, it is as though they sit around this sacred fire, each offering their truth into the flames, not to consume the others but to offer light. And from this light, decisions are made—not by force, not by debate, but by unity born of prayer and shared vision.

The Smoke Hole: Opening to the Divine

Above, the smoke hole is never closed. It represents openness to divine guidance. The Assembly must always leave space for the Most Great Spirit—Wakan Tanka—to enter. The lodge fills with confusion if the smoke hole is blocked by ego, rigidity, or haste. But the way is cleared for inspiration, healing, and unity when left open through prayer, humility, and trust.

The Tipi Covering: Shelter for the Community

The tipi covering represents the protection the Assembly offers the wider community. It is made of principles, laws, and shared commitments. But it must be tied with care. The covering flaps are in the wind if the principles are misunderstood or misapplied. But when the teachings are applied with wisdom and compassion, the tipi becomes a sanctuary for all people drawn to the warmth of its fire.

The Assembly as Tióšpaye

Let every Local Spiritual Assembly remember it is not a separate institution, but the spiritual heart of the tióšpaye—the extended spiritual family of the community. The elders, the youth, the women, the men, the children, the seekers—all have a place around the fire. The Assembly’s role is not to control but to serve, not to command but to accompany, not to separate but to unify.

Let this Tipi rise on every land and with every people.

Let each pole be strong. Let the fire burn clear. Let the smoke rise in prayer. Let the community gather.

And may the ancestors, those who have come before us and laid the foundations of our faith, smile upon those who labor to raise the lodge of guidance, until one day, from this sacred circle, the foundations of the New World Civilization will shine like the morning star over the sacred hoop of the nations.
