The Language of Heaven: Speaking With Wakan Tanka

Our elders teach us that there is a way of speaking that is older than words, a way that does not come from the tongue alone but rises from the deepest places of our heart, our breath, and our spirit.

This is what our elders call the language of heaven, the living spirit, where we are no longer separated by sound, grammar, or human limitation.

In this sacred way of being, we do not “talk” to Wakan Tanka, the Great Mystery. We enter into a sacred relationship, into a living exchange of presence.

Just as the wind moves through the trees without needing language, just as the rivers speak without words, so too does the human spirit remember how to communicate in silence that is full, alive, and knowing.

This language is not learned in books. This language is remembered through humility, stillness, and the cleansing and purity of our inner life.

When we pray in this way, we are not asking from a place of separation or neediness. We are returning to spiritual alignment and harmony.

The noise of the outer world fades away, and we feel like we are being held within a greater field of life, a sacred web where every thought, every feeling, every intention carries meaning.

In that moment, we are no longer speaking to our Creator. We are speaking with our Creator, because we realize we have never been separate.

Our elders teach that when our heart is like a still, clear lake, it reflects the sky perfectly. In that stillness, the voice of the Great Spirit is not heard as sound, but as guidance, clarity, peace, and a deep inner knowing that moves through us.

This is why the answer does not come in words. The answer comes as direction, as truth that feels right in the bones, as a quiet certainty that carries no fear.

To walk in this way requires more than belief. It requires discipline of the spirit and purity of intention.

We must release anger, fear, and distraction, not by force, but by healing and understanding their roots, so that our hearts become open, loving, and trustworthy.

Our elders always remind us that every human being carries this sacred capacity. This sacred capacity is not reserved for a few. But like any sacred gift, it must be nurtured through relationship, with the land, with the ancestors, with one another, with our own inner life, and our Creator.

When we sit with the trees, when we listen to the waters, when we honor Mother Earth, we are being taught this language again. It is the same language spoken by the birds at dawn and by the stars at night, a language of relationship, connection, balance, and reciprocity.

And so, when we begin to reach that truly spiritual condition our elders speak of, we begin to understand something profound: we are never alone, and we have never been unheard.

The voice of Wakan Tanka is always present, always speaking, but it is our own inner noise that prevents us from hearing.

When we quiet ourselves and live well, with justice, respect, humility, courage, and love, the pathway always opens.

Then our prayers are no longer separate moments. Our whole life becomes a prayer. Our walking becomes a prayer. Our service to the People becomes a prayer.

And in this way, the language of the spirit is no longer something we visit. This becomes the way we live, the way we love, and the way we help bring harmony back to our Human Family, to Mother Earth, and to all life.
