Shunkmanu Teaches His Grandchildren to Be the Change

As Shunkmanu sat along the beautiful mountain stream with his grandchildren, he began to speak with wisdom and assurance that only a lifetime of experience could impart.

"Our Indigenous peoples cannot help but witness with concern the escalating turmoil in global affairs," Shunkmanu began, his gaze drifting over the serene waters of the stream. However, we understand that the conflicts, injustices, and suffering we witness and suffer are symptoms of the inevitable decline of the old colonial, materialistic world order, as foretold by our prophecies."

Ella, the eldest of the grandchildren, nodded thoughtfully, her eyes reflecting the wisdom of her grandfather's words. "Grandpa, do you really believe that this upheaval will lead to the emergence of a new global civilization founded on principles of justice, unity, compassion, and harmony?"

Shunkmanu smiled warmly at Ella's question. "Yes, my dear, I have complete faith, as prophesied, that such a time will come. Colonial-era political structures will inevitably give way to a more just and peaceful global order as humanity recognizes its interconnectedness with all life."

Nahtayu, Alana, and Elijah listened intently, their curiosity piqued by their grandfather's words. "But Grandpa," Nahtayu said, "what can we do to help bring about this new civilization?"

Shunkmanu's eyes twinkled with happiness at his grandchildren's eagerness to make a difference. "Ah, my beloved grandchildren, we must remember our Sixteen Indigenous Guiding Principles for Building a Sustainable, Harmonious, Prosperous World. In growing global conflicts, two key principles stand out: Move to the Positive and Be the Change You Want To See."

Carson and Elise exchanged knowing glances, recognizing the importance of these principles in their own lives. "What do these principles mean, Grandpa?" Carson asked, his young voice filled with curiosity.

Shunkmanu leaned forward, his expression earnest. "Moving to the Positive means that we approach solving the critical problems in our lives and communities by visualizing and moving toward the positive alternative we wish to create. We build on our strengths rather than wasting energy fighting the negative."

Maya and Alex nodded in understanding, their minds already turning over ways to apply this principle in their lives. "And what about 'Be the Change You Want To See'?" Maya asked, her eyes shining with determination.

Shunkmanu's smile widened as he looked at Maya and Alex. "Being the change means that the most powerful strategies for change always involve positive role modeling and the creation of living examples of the solutions we are proposing. By walking the path, we make the way visible to others."

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm glow over the mountain stream, Shunkmanu and his grandchildren sat together in quiet contemplation, feeling renewed hope and purpose in their hearts. They knew that embracing these guiding principles and living in harmony with the natural world would help usher in a new era of peace, justice, and compassion for all beings.
