Shunkmanu Teaches His Grandchildren About Pre-Existence and Existence

Understanding pre-existence and existence...

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue over the mountainous landscape as Shunkmanu gathered his grandchildren by the bubbling stream. The air was filled with the soothing sounds of nature, setting the stage for a sharing circle.

"Come, my dear ones," Shunkmanu beckoned, his eyes twinkling with anticipation. "Let us embark on a journey of understanding together."

The grandchildren, Ella, Maya, Nahtayu, Oliver, and Alana, eagerly sat in a circle on the soft grass, their eyes reflecting curiosity. Shunkmanu began, "Imagine the vast tapestry of existence, much like the radiant sun above us. The Creator is like this sun, emanating knowledge and energy. We are like the rays extending from it."

Pointing to the stream, Shunkmanu continued, "Now, let's relate this to the flowing water. Ella, what do you think the water represents in our analogy?"

Ella thought momentarily before responding, "Is it like the energy and wisdom that flows from the Creator, Grandpa?"

"Exactly, my Granddaughter," Shunkmanu smiled. "The water, like wisdom, nourishes and sustains all life. Now, Maya, can you tell us about the interconnectedness of the elements, like the rocks and the water in the stream?"

Maya nodded thoughtfully. "Just as the rocks and water are connected, everything in the world is connected. Like a well-crafted canoe, the Creator's wisdom is the cause and purpose."

Shunkmanu's eyes beamed with happiness. "Well said, Maya. Now, Nahtayu, I want you to think about the sun. What does it symbolize in our Indigenous teachings?"

Nahtayu, with a spark in his eyes, replied, "The sun represents the spirit, pre-existent and eternal. Like the rays, the body originates and relies on the spirit."

Shunkmanu nodded approvingly. "You're grasping the essence, Nahtayu. Now, Oliver, let's talk about existence and non-existence. How can a transition from life to dust be understood?"

Oliver furrowed his brow, deep in thought. "It's not absolute non-existence but a transformation, like when a canoe is crafted from wood. The created world exists but seems non-existent in relationship to the Great Spirit."

Shunkmanu smiled at the insightful response. "Exactly, Oliver. Now, Alana, can you tell us about the continuous outpouring of the Great Spirit's grace and its importance for balance and harmony?"

Alana confidently said, "The Creator's creation reflects divine attributes, and grace is like a guiding force, ensuring balance and harmony in existence."

Shunkmanu nodded in satisfaction. "Well done, Alana. Remember, my beloved ones, these teachings emphasize the interdependence and sacredness of all life. Let the wisdom of the Creator guide you on your journey, just as the sun guides the world with its eternal light."

As the sun dipped below the horizon, they sat together, their bond strengthened by the interactive exchange of wisdom and understanding along the mountain stream. The teachings of Shunkmanu became not just words but a shared experience woven into the fabric of their collective consciousness.
