Remembering Richie Havens, From Greenwich Village to Seattle

I met the late Richie Havens in Greenwich Village, New Your City, when my High School Friend, Mike Friedman and I hitchhiked to New York City, on our way to Europe inAugust, 1962.

Richie was not famous at that time and was playing guitar at the Cafe Why. The Cafe Why was across the street from the Cafe Why Not? We went to listen to Richie play almost every night for the two weeks we were in New York City. We would have philosophical and spiritual type talks between sets.

In 1977 I met Richie again when he and Buffy St. Marie came to do do a fundraiser for the United Indians of all Tribes Foundation in Seattle. We had a good visit and remembered our visits in August 1962. I loved his song Freedom, even more deeply today than I did in 1977 and 1962.

May the Creator continue to bless and guide Richie in the Other Side Camp!
