Remembering My Brother-in-Law Jake, a Good Relative

My Brother-in-Law was a great man with a spiritual understanding and faith that went far beyond my capacities! When he decided it was time to go to the Other Side Camp and enter the hospice, he knew it would be no more than 4 days before he left this World of Shadows and entered the Infinite Worlds of Light!

During those four days never did I see him complain. Not once! When I knew his transition was close, I asked if I could have some moments alone with my Brother-in-Law Jake. In Ihanktowan Dakota culture you are allowed to tease your Brother-in-Law and he must graciously and quietly take the teasing. Personal exchanges are kept to a minimum! Let me suffice it to say, in our last visit there were lots of tears!

At the sametime, whether I was right or wrong my Brother-in Law fiercely protected me. This meant , if someone said something negative about me, they were completely banished from my Brother-in-Law's world, permanently, as witnessed by my sister on several occasions ! This what is called unconditional love and loyalty!

As well, he was a great husband to my sister and completely devoted occasions to his children! He was an absolute embodiment of the the highest quality of our Dakota People and that is to be a GOOD RELATIVE!
