Remembering Dr. Dan Jordan and His Reflections on Consciousness

"To be conscious requires one to compare what is going on in the immediate present with the past in anticipation of the future. There is no way to make such a comparison unless that past, can have some kind of representation in the present. For this, symbols are needed. Without them, the memory of things past could not be brought to a level of consciousness in the present, and there would be no continuity of self-awareness over time."

Dr. Dan Jordan who wrote this was found murdered in October 1982. Dan was one of the great teachers I had in my academic life. A good brother Roger Coe passed on to a memory stick of all of Dan's writings that I had misplaced somewhere in my past journey. I am very thankful to have Dan's reflections to renew my mind. The last time I saw Dan was more than 36 years ago. As I reread his essays, 36 years seems like yesterday.

A large tree covered in white blossoms stands on a green bank, mirrored in still water beneath a cloudy, sunlit sky.
