My Tʼaŋké Hazel Red Bird, Veteran of Standing Rock

My Tʼaŋké (Aunt ), Hazel Red Bird-Veteran – Wakpala, South Dakota, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe

My Tʼaŋké Hazel Red Bird was a courageous Indigenous woman from Wakpala on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, South Dakota, who devoted her life to service.

In 1944, she left Standing Rock to enlist in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, where she trained in Pierre, South Dakota. She later served in the Women’s Air Corps, offering her skills and dedication during a critical time in history.

Her legacy reflects the quiet strength and profound commitment of many Indigenous veterans, whose contributions have often gone unrecognized yet stand as a testimony to the bravery and service embedded in our Nations.
