My Beloved Parents: Two Peas in a Pod

My beloved parents are two peas in a pod, as my beloved father used to always say! They met at the Haskell Indian Boarding School when my father was 17 and my mother was 13.

Of course, there was no “romance allowed” at Haskell, but my father would always say that when he saw my mother for the first time, he said to himself, “That’s the woman I am going to marry!”

And sure enough, in October 1943, he had a leave from the Navy and he went to Oklahoma, “to claim what was his, “ he used to say! I arrived 9 months later.

He said, “Although, I had no horses, I came to ask your mother to marry me with $2000 in my pocket and a degree in Forestry from Oregon State.” Because of his poor academic education at

Haskell, it took him 5 years to complete a four year degree!

He always used to tell me, “Son, the old ways are the good ways!”
