Lighting the 8th Fire:
The Seven Fires Prophecy is a significant prophetic teaching among Indigenous peoples, particularly the Anishinaabeg. It foretells the spiritual and cultural journey of the Anishinaabe Nation and, by extension, all of humanity. Here's a summary of the Seven Fires Prophecy:
First Fire: The Anishinaabe Nation will rise, following the Midewiwin Lodge and the Sacred Megis. They will journey to a chosen ground, marked by a turtle-shaped island where food grows on water (Mooniyaang/Montreal).
Second Fire: The direction of the Sacred Shell is lost, and the Midewiwin diminishes. A girl is born to point the way back to traditional ways, and the Anishinaabe people find the second turtle-shaped island at Niagara Falls.
Third Fire: The Anishinaabe will find their chosen ground, a land in the west where food grows upon the waters (Manitoulin Island).
Fourth Fire: Two prophets deliver this prophecy. It speaks of a time when the light-skinned race will come. If they come in brotherhood, there will be positive change; if in death, there will be destruction. The French and later the British and Americans arrive.
Fifth Fire: A time of great struggle and a false promise. If the people abandon old teachings for the promise, it will lead to near destruction.
Sixth Fire: The false promise is evident, leading to a new sickness, the disruption of balance, and a loss of purpose among the people.
Seventh Fire: A young prophet emerges, and New People seek guidance from the Elders. Some Elders have fallen asleep, and the New People must be careful in their approach. If they choose the right path, the Seventh Fire will light the Eighth, an eternal fire of peace, love, brotherhood, and sisterhood. If not, suffering and destruction will return.
The Seven Fires Prophecy emphasizes the importance of spiritual and cultural revival, the consequences of choices between materialism and spirituality, and the need to reconnect with traditional teachings and wisdom. It conveys hope for a better future if the right path is chosen.
