Justice as the Sacred Order of the Universe

From our Indigenous perspective, justice is not merely a concept tied to courts or laws, it is the sacred order of the universe, Wówačhiŋtȟaŋka, the great balance that governs all relationships between human beings, Mother Earth , and the Spirit World. Justice is the breath of harmony between all things, the living memory of right conduct passed down through our Elders, our ceremonies, and the original instructions gifted to us by Wakan Tanka, the Creator.

True civilization arises when this sacred order is honored—when every being is seen, heard, and valued; when the strong protect the weak, and decisions are made not for wealth or power, but for the well-being of all, seven generations forward. In such a world, justice is not a tool of control, but a way of living rightly aligned with truth, compassion, and sacred responsibility.

But in today’s world, what is called civilization is often governed by exploitation, not balance; by greed, not reciprocity. Justice has been distorted into legalism that serves the powerful while silencing the suffering. Mother Earth is wounded. Our peoples are still healing from colonization, genocide, and broken promises.

And yet, we remember. We remember that justice, in its sacred form, is the root of true peace and prosperity. It is the fire at the center of the Sacred Hoop of Life. Without it, no civilization can endure. With it, all peoples can rise together, in dignity, in unity, and in harmony with all that lives.

This is the path our ancestors walked. This is the path we must now return to if we are to have Peace on Mother Earth.
