My beloved mother and father met at Haskell Indian School Indian School when my father was 17 and my mother was 13. He said when he saw my mother he said to him self, that is the woman I am going to marry.
They correspond by letters for 10 years while my father prepared his dowry as the man in our Dakota culture gave the dowry not the woman.
In October, 1943, on leave from the Navy, he travelled to Sulphur, Oklahoma with $2000 and Degree in Forestry, that took him 5 years to complete because of his poor education at Haskell.
When he arrived at my mother’s door he said he had come to claim what was his. My mother agreed and they were married. Nine months later I arrived.
