I am very thankful that Sister Sacheen has finally received an apology after so many years. I remember how she was treated when she refused the Oscar on behalf of Marlon Brando. I was home with my parents when we watched these Oscars on TV.
Shortly after, Sister Sacheen came to United Indians to attend Mike Smith's first American Indian Film Festival, where we met and became good friends. She was the first Indigenous person I met who lived and always promoted a vegetarian and healthy lifestyle. She is one of the most straightforward and honest people I have ever met, just as she is candid today about her impending death from breast cancer.
Please remember Sister Sacheen in your prayers as she transitions into the Other Side Camp. She is genuinely one of the great spiritual warriors of my generation.
