Honoring My Ate, Mato Gi, on His 107th Birthday

Tomorrow is my Ate's 107th Birthday. I thought I would begin celebrating by sharing some old videos of Ate, Mato Gi, Brown Bear. This is the name he passed on to my son, Tiger, just before Ate died.

Mato Gi was a true Horse Whisperer. He was the Northwest Cutting Horse Champion when he was 66 and 5th in the World in the World Championships in Oklahoma City.

He was competing with horse owners who had big ranches and put a lot of money into training their horses, including the best Professional Horse Trainers, and could pay large amounts for the best quarter horses. Ate had his little arena and a very small barn where you could feed three horses during the winter.

One day I asked him what he did when he went into competition, He said, " Son, whatever you do, always trust our Creator! When you learn to do this you will have no fear! Then you will be guided by Wakan Tanka, the Great Spirit"
