The Film, "Healing the Hurts" made more than 35 years ago, was the catalyst that ignited and initiated the Canadian Indian Residential School Healing Movement.
The Canadian Government would not fund the film. It was the Alaskan Native Health Board that funded the making of the film, with the Community of Alkali Lake, British, Columbia, for $25, 000.
After it was made, there were no funds to edit the film and we had more than 50 hours of raw footage.
Finally, the Knowledge Network, in Vancouver, agreed for us to use their editing equipment, without cost, as long as they could broadcast the film, three times on their network.
We quickly agreed, and "Healing the Hurts" was broadcast to homes throughout British Columbia in the fall of 1986. and from this beginning, the film spread throughout Canada and beyond. This effort was a gift to the People, no money was ever made on the film, so share it and use it in any way that may be helpful.
Our heartfelt thanks to our late brother, Choctaw Film Maker Phil Lucas. Brother Phil and his Film Crew did outstanding work in making the film, as nothing was staged or planned. It unfolded, and happened, as it happened!
Little did we know, that more than 35 years later that "Healing the Hurts" would be shared on Canada's new Federal Holiday, " The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation." How did this happen? One Day at Time!!!!
