Happy Birthday, Brother Bernie: Remembering a Leader of the People

Happy Birthday, Brother Bernie!

I know firsthand that Beloved Brother Bernie received many bullets in the front and arrows in the back. The People always came first to Bernie. He always told me the arrows in the back hurt the most. After 55 years on this journey, I have to fully agree!

I was with Bernie at the 2nd and Cherry Building when we had a one-room office with Sister Judie Guthrie, Bob Keller, and myself in 1973.

Bernie was a bear! When he took a position, no one could move him. No one has since or before brought together Urban and Reservation Indians like Bernie did!

There has been no one at UIATF that could ever fill Bernie's shoes! Bernie was one of a kind! He gave his life to United Indians.

He was only 62 when he went to the other side camp. But he is still closer than our closest vein! There is no death, just a change of worlds! In a short time, all that knew and worked with Brother Bernie will be with him in the other side camp! I will see you there!
