The Haskell Indian Institute, where my mother and father met in 1932, was designed for the same purpose as the Carlisle Indian School-assimilation! In the long-run, some assimilation occurred, but the children of many Indigenous Tribes and Nations, who would have never met, became life-long friends and allies.
This does not justify the physical, emotional, spiritual, mental and sexual abuse that happened in Residential Schools, but the prophecies are just beginning to be fulfilled. Fifty years from now the reason why we need to be thankful, at all times and under all conditions, will become clear! Every test and difficulty that comes to us in Life comes for our spiritual growth and development! Wopida Tanka for all that has occurred in my life!
I can't say, at the time, I was thankful, often, when I was going through a painful and hurtful learning experience. As I look back over the past 73 Winters, I am grateful for the spiritual wisdom, strength, compassion, love, and understanding that Life's on-going tests and challenges are gifting. As I am still alive, I am sure a few more trials and difficulties are coming my way! I pray I will be steadfast and faithful no matter whatever these tests and challenges may come before I make my journey to the "The Other Side Camp!"
