June 1956, with my Dad and my cousin Billy Forte on the Sherwood Ranch on the Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota. Billy and I were flankers!
Once the year-old calf was roped we ran down the rope and flanked the calf, bringing it to the ground with its back legs stretched out. If it was male, we cut it and disinfected the cut! My Tahansi Greg Sherwood was always close by, watching his older cousins. Tahansi Greg knew his time to do the same, was coming!
With my summer's experience, I won the Walla Walla County Fair's Calf Scramble in 1960! With all the flanking experience in South Dakota, it was an easy win. It took about 5 minutes for the next competitor to bring the next calf into the winning area! Good memories!
